Bliphop, part I

Bliphop, a funny and silly term. "Blips and beeps backed by dope ass beats" basically, hmm I wonder where I got that from. There was a while (2003-2004) when this was my favourite stuff to discover and hear. I still think most of it is fantastic. It's such a good idea and many have tried but many have also failed. Here's a selection of tracks I think are interesting.

Xela - My rap (Dosage, 2003 on Merck)
I start with two tracks on Merck for many reasons. They examplify what I think is bliphop or severly electronified hiphop as they themselves put it. This is from one of their excellent compilations.

Machine drum - Wishbone be broken (Now you know, 2001 on Merck)
Together with prefuse they introduced me to this music. Stuttering vocals can be so good. 'Now you know' is his best work, it is so crunchy (also check the tracks 'hello my future', 'thanks very much' and 'jewlea').

Funkstörung - Fat camp feva feat. tes (2003 on !K7)
Having real rappers perform on these type of songs is sort of unusual (shadowhuntaz excluded - which I have a hard time feeling). Works perfectly here.

Intricate - Replace (In pectra, 2004 on Spezial material)
Moving over to more electronic areas here..
This album has one of the coolest covers! It is filled with dense, some would say early autechre style tracks. I say early autechre is good, but this is better(!). First time I heard intricate I didn't quite get it. I couldn't feel it. So do not despair if you can't hear the beauty immediately. This is truly top notch shit.

I posted a while ago scientific american - between urban moments, and if I hadn't did it back then it would absolutely have a spot in this post. Brothomstates has a track on Qtio which I guess could fit nicely here as well (who knows, maybe some other time). I also was totally going to post a prefuse 73 track but decided to limit both parts to 4 tunes. Yes, part II is completed, written and all, it contains the same quality RC picks but is of the more mellow variety. Expect it tomorrow or the day after that.

Oh, right, movies

Since according to the description RC shouldn't only be about music and my badly written comments about it I thought I'd take the opportunity to announce that I have watched a batch of movies last week. They range from crappy to decent. Best of the lot was probably "Rules of Attraction", which was about friggin time I saw (it wasn't perfect tho, too lengthy rewind scenes, too little about the secret admirer etc). I also got to see "Doom" (tee hee), "Mirror Mask", "Kiss kiss bang bang". Nothing overly exciting I reckon.

Ok back to music and my badly written comments about it, but atleast slightly related this time. I've stumbled upon a cool track. I got it after hearing a conversation two persons on slsk had about it (one of them made it). I asked if I could hear it after they mentioned it contained samples from Junebug. Sure enough.. he uploaded it to me. And, damn, it's pretty tight. Has certainly grown on me. File under IDM I guess.

I did go see Cat 5 yesterday, but the experience was kind of spoiled because my friend who I was supposed to meet had to leave just as I got there. And that ruins a lot cause honestly Cat 5 isn't lone guy sitting in the bar type of music, at all. It's pure party dance music. Production is top notch and sometimes intentionally cheesy (I suspect), vocals are decent. It's like eurotrashdance mixed with robyn-style beats and such. If I had been completely smashed and with a bunch of good friends it would most likely have been a blast instead of just OK. Situational music ftw.

Dark vektor just released a new 12" on Drivecom, I'll see if I can get hold of it and perhaps post a track (supposedly it's kick ass).

I treated myself some records, a sweater and a visit to my hairdresser today (wow, mr. big spender!) and tonight I will probably get to see the electro-pop/disco duo Cat 5 who has received some press here. Never actually heard their shit so shall be interesting. It is snowing, again. That makes me a sad panda.

Williams

I never heard of this guy, Williams, until OMG a while back posted the most wicked knife remix (of silent shout) I could possibly imagine and shortly after Tape shows me the superb Pinball single. So I got a little interested who this dude might be and what he has been and is up to.

Thanks to discogs I found some information and his homepage to satisfy my curiousity. He's got a good free mix (tracklist) on his page, which I suggest you go download.

This man has done quite some varying stuff, and all of it shows mad talent. I'm really looking forward to what he will release next, aside from his in-the-works/soon-to-be-released remixes of Linus Loves and Eyerer & Chopstick that is.

System 7 - Alphawave (Plastikman Mix)

As inde pop hasn't really been on the top of my prioritiy list I only yesterday (and today) got around to listen to Sufjan Stevens - Illinois. Splendid album, very sweet. Yeah so I like that stuff, I also got hold of Arcade Fire's Funeral and the stars debut album Nightsongs (jesus, they have evolved in 5 years). But i'm not going to post any indie (enough blogs do that already hehe). I will share a Jel mp3 from his new album "Soft money". It is good, people are excited. Beats deluxe.

In other news; i visited local club Fabriken at Wish yesterday where hollertronix was going to dj. Either they played shitty stuff or they hadn't actually started. I left pretty early because the club, the people, the place, the atmosphere and most of the music was just crap. Boo.

Never really understood the hype about this guy to be honest. And always thought his stuff was a tad too stiff. This track on the guy's upcoming album 'Color Strip' is not shabby at all though! Me likes. Old school electro vibes tends to turn me on (not totally unlike My Beats on bleep-oh-six).

Here's some top cat collaboration action. The album is called 'Magnificient city' and the few tracks I've heard from it are nice.

If you think this stuff is too new school for ya, I want to warmly recommend Ant's mixtape "Melodies and memories '85 - '89" which I only heard for the first time very recently. A classic mixtape with a pro selection of songs and top notch mixing and cutting. (perhaps i'll upload a lil' something from it...)

As I undertook a massive cleaning mission, where the target was my bedroom, I put on Autechre's Untilted. My opinions about it haven't changed (to my surprise actually), it's still not doing much to me except the first track which is (still) ace. Strange, it's supposed to grow on me man. Alright, glad we got that out of the way because here's some new music that deserves some attention...

Reminds me of Joseph Nothing because (some of) his sound is also toyish and good. And funny. What a sweet track this is, I can totally picture the fluffy, pink bunny getting pushed by a mower in my mind. So yeah buy Toy's self titled debut album, I mean can you imagine your life without songs titled 'Realistic Martian Landing Set', 'Googil Dream Home', 'Grass beatbox' or 'Golden fish in pool'? Didn't think so.

Ok first of all I had planned on linking video captures to this list. The problem is that there isn't video captures of them all, so I will provide a video link if it exists. Prefuse 73 - Matrimoniods (For Elivin + Susana Estela)
After the first couple of rounds listening to the fuse's latest album, Security screenings, this is the standout track to me. Very beautiful.

Prefuse 73 - Creating Cyclical Headaches (With Four Tet)
Four tet and Scott Herren! Need I say more? Yeah, well it isn't creating a headcahe, but maybe that's just me.

There's some other good tracks on the album too, but as usual with prefuse it takes a while to get into it.

Strato

Yay, I got to see Atmosphere yesterday, or, rather Slug backed by a bad ass live band. Swedes will recognise the experience somewhat from Timbuktu & Damn! It was very, very funky and catchy it almost felt like a rock/pop concert at times (no, that's not negative in this context). And unlike other hiphop acts Slug really shines live, crazy good flow and voice. Quality from beginning to end. They did songs from God loves ugly, Felt to the newest stuff. I missed Brother Ali because I got there a little late though.
