Another week gone by. And another weekend is here with all its temptations. Don't know what I'll do tonight, maybe just cook with some friends and drink a bit of wine. Tomorrow is a whole 'nother story though, as you probably know by now.

Robert Hood - Razr [Music man, 2005]
Electro from legendary detroit techno minimalist Hood (aka missing channel, the vision, etc). Been getting tired of the whole german tech-house business lately. More pure detroit techno and electro, no gimmicks. This is off the brilliant "Hoodmusic 1", will most likely post a heavy techno track from it tomorrow.

M83 vs Aphex Twin vs Khia - Pussylicker [?]
Mash-up time. Big names, pussy in the title, what else can a guy want? Seriously though this is pretty good, in that typical mash-up sense.

Why tired of "tech-house" (and its variations/cousins whatever) you might wonder. It's simple and has been bothering me for a while now. It's the new hiphop (or indiepop) or something, EVERYBODY listens to it, and it (atleast feels) so popular that many productions are/gets formulaic in nature and very uninteresting, thus watering down the genre(s) with crap. People don't care, they just want electronic-house-techno-electro-whatever-lol-dance-hip-dj-plays-it. Am I way off and just being grumpy?

Got a really luxurious problem at hand. On saturday there's three (ya, that's many for GBG) clubs/events that I'd like to go to.

• The premiere of club Kraft. Dimitrios K and Jor-el's latest thing where pounding music teams up with hypnotizing visuals. Sounds really interesting, especially since Staffan Linzatti is on the decks tending to our ears while Andreas Nilsson (who made some visuals for The Knife) takes care of our eyes (at Storans lilla klubbscen). Something like this I was referring to a couple of posts back...
  
• Ratatat live. I like some of their stuff, would be cool to see how they perform live (at Sticky Fingers top floor).
• Midnight Express. Electro club from Luke Eargoggle and Technicolor - Romanian artist Atarax controlling the dj booth (at Min bror och jag).

However! If I stay in the mood I'm in now - I won't be going anywhere on saturday (nor friday). Tired of the whole club thing. But, as we all know, that could change (and probably will) later on in the week.

Holy cow, heavy & groovy minimal on this b-side of Pokerbot, which is weirder (but also good). Unknown producer (hailing from England) to me but it's hypnotizing stuff. Strip the fluff and come correct with some proper techno!

Yesterday I started the evening with some beer, chips and a movie ("El Espinazo del Diablo" - very good). Then off to Uppåt Frammåt and Hatet, a first for me at that club, was quality stuff. Drank some long island ice tea. Then off to The Eye and I must say I was very, very disappointed! For the first time at the eye I wasn't pleased at all, it has been super every time I've been there before but now it was just.. meh. Must've been another dj or someone having a bad day or something cause it was quite sub par.

Tonight it's Beli Konji at Respekt. Will most likely go there.

Anyway I want more clubs that occur less often (like Beli Konji), like once a month type of things. And on these occasions they do something a bit more extra, like book some fat live act or dj or have some theme or whatever.

Moonbeam - Eclipse [Traum, 2007] (buy)
Expert techno on Traum from Moonbeam who has a butt ugly homepage (not unlike most myspace pages, yuck). Fortunately the music is not anything like their web design. I like how the B-side (Sunshine) both look (pictured above) and sound. But it is the a-side that gets my favour here.

Have to mention this really cool t-shirt. Can be bought at phonica, and I want one:

DTM is according to themselves "a grass roots DJ/Producer collective dedicated to preserving the legacy of true Detroit electronic music and its proliferation around the world." A worthy cause, indeed!

Just finished watching "You and me and everyone we know". Have to say that I like it. A 'simple', feel-good kind of sweet film. Soundtrack was good. The whole production gave me some Junebug vibes.

Solen den gick sakta upp

Saw Citizen Kane for the first time ever yesterday (about time). Very nice photo, special effects, make-up, symbolism and small details sprinkled all over the place.

Also watched Pans Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro on sunday. Extremely pretty fairy tale for grown ups! Recommended.

The Arcade Fire - The Well And The Lighthouse [Rough trade, 2007] (pre-order)
New upcoming album from these pop song crafters extraordinare. Gonna be released in March (the 5th?). A bit tighter sound than on Funeral, same big arrangements, and we have one fine record that will probably be quite well received by most people. This track and 'No cars go' are the catchiest imo.

You have to check this out. Heard it the first time a few days ago in this recording of a radio show here in gbg. It's the first track and Luke Eargoggle talks fondly of it. Brilliant.

Dominik Eulberg - Die Alpenstrandlaufer Von Spiekeroog [Traum, 2007]
Eulberg's upcoming album 'Heimische gefilde' is without elaborating too much, a masterpiece. Basically all complete tracks (except two, the above link points to one) have been released before, but not these particular edits, and it's filled with german nature/animal rants as interludes (quite charming, by our man Eulberg himself I believe!). It's an outstanding collection of songs. Be sure to buy this when it gets released (April 2nd). Dominik remains one of my absolute favourite producers.

Back home again after a hectic, but fun, weekend. Didn't see Pluxus yesterday, I was simply too tired. Attended a record fair that, as usual, mostly consisted of mediocre hard rock vinyl. Did manage to dig up a FSOL 12" (Cascade, gotta love that nineties trance-alike cover) and a Sugarcubes 7" 'Walkabout' (which I haven't heard yet).

Explosions In The Sky - The Birth and Death of the Day [Temporary residence, 2007] (pre-order)
Brilliant opening track for a great album ('All of a sudden I miss everyone'), their fourth one to date by the way. Grand and almost symphonic so called post rock. 'So long, lonesome' and 'What do you go home to?' are two other beautiful songs. Not to be missed.

Suddenly alive

Yesterday Andreas Tilliander aka Mokira, Rechord, Komp and Lowfour played at the filmfestival tent. I was there and echecked it out. I'm not 100% familliar with all his material so I'm not sure about this, but; it sounded like a lot of new stuff. It was very acidalicious and twisted. Overall it was a nice concert with good atmosphere.
The day before that with Play paul and all was cool too, very party music.

Wonderful debut album from Marit Posch with a lot of different styles. Not too different from Apparat & Ellen Allien's Orchestra of bubbles which i really enjoyed. With vocals in this sort of music I often feel like it's superfluous, but here it fits right in (like a glove) - top notch production as well, of course. Electronic pop music at its finest. (the album is titled "Happy in grey")

Unfortunately I don't know where you can buy this yet, be on the look out though (release date is 26th of feb).

John Dahlbäck's alter ego Hug has an album out on Kompakt called "Heroes" full of fine tunes. A couple of really hot tracks, so well worth your dough. Will this dude ever slow down on outputting stuff? I hope not.

Filmfestival

No swimming occured (postponed it to tomorrow). Did see Epidemic - very amusing and good movie. No school work accomplished. Did see Midaircondo (now no longer a trio but a duo) at filmfestivalen's party tent - decent concert but the beatless stuff didn't really appeal to me and the björkish vocals got a bit too björkish at times.

From the spectacular album Nightwidth comes this beautiful piece of techno. Living music, it's giving me goosebumps. I simply adore the little creaky squeaks of 303 and the atmosphere this track has. And every track delivers something on this album, every sound and click, static, kickdrum, pad, bass and bleep delivers. You better believe it.

Brothomstates vs Blamstrain - Metadata [Narita, 2006] (buy)
Incredible, I miss out on one of my long time favourite artist's latest release. Brothomstates (aka Dune back in the demoscene days), the man behind the nothing short of genious Qtio and Rktic eps, teams up with fellow fin Blamstrain to create some carefully crafted pieces of aural pleasure. From last august, rawr. This is not anything like his older material (nor in blamstrain's style), and it's not really dance music. Rather it's thick and heavy electronic acid-honey heading in the dance direction without ever quite getting there, knowhaImean?

Had my first two lectures today. The first was in the "Programming languages" course which is about understanding and implementing lexers, parsers, interpreters and eventually (simple) compilers. It really seems interesting, but quite tough. The second was in "Systems programming in C", I know C quite well so the introduction to the language didn't really do much for me.

Watched "guldbagge-galan" yesterday - what a lousy year for swedish films. The whole thing felt really second rate. And "Farväl Falkenberg" didn't receive any prize at all?! Come on. Best documentary - "Vikarien" does seem interesting though. Hopefully 2007 will renew the swedish movie industry. Long speeches of gratitude make me sick.

Okay that skatebård track was just to warm you up for this crushing minimal techno anthem. Dark and menacing the way we like it. The jerky b-side 'A night like this' is nothing to scoff at either. Damn crazy germans.

On a lighter side of the spectrum with spot on melodies and housy rhythms comes this angel like tune from the Märtini Brös. Originally released back in june. Never the less, I'm left speechless upon hearing it again.

Tv-series are the (not really so) new hip. Been watching the last 3 episodes of battlestar galactica, checked out the first 5 eps of Heroes, the 2 first of Riket (Lars von Trier) and I have the first season of Dexter waiting for me. Exciting.

Purchased Junior Boys' "So this is good bye" on a bit of a whim two days ago. A very good album, but I really shouldn't have bought it because I'm absolutely broke. What a bummer.

Their first album, 'Children of love' was very fine and quirky. Now it's time for the evil pony to shine - so part 1 of "The dark side of the pony" is unleashed. And soon, part 2 will be here (around the 7th of February). I like the direction this is heading. Go get physical, go!

Traum starts of the new year with two remix twelves from Minilogue. Both 'The Leopard' and 'Seconds' gets reworked. This is the strongest of the four tracks presented. Beautiful, melodic and a bhit eerie.

Fun thread over at discogs.com about the most silly genre names. Really, I agree with all of them. I should boycott genre names all together I think.

Anyway, my candidates for most-stupid-genre-name are (all already mentioned in the thread):

How can you EVER tell someone you listen to IDM!? I can just imagine the conversation. "What does it stand for..?", "Err.. Intelligent Dance Music." Then the other person 100% guaranteed thinks this "Uh, ok fucking jack ass."

Best genre names definetly are:

* Techno

Both names have been dragged around and kind of abused, but solid names despite their blurriness. Then we have the classics such as Jazz, Soul and so on that I do not have a problem with, probably because they are so widely recognized. Most diffuse names (and also uneccesary and a bit silly):
* Minimal techno
* Tech house
* Electro house

A lot of people are sensetive about genres, I don't have a problem with that. But personally I couldn't care less what something "belongs" to. Maybe it's because I very much suck at placing music in imaginary boxes.

Happy new year

The champagne (Louis Roederer) is in the fridge together with a couple of beers. Today will consist of some fine cooking, a good meal and drinks with friends. Nothing fancy.

Yesterday was yet another slow day, it was raining. So after a quick swing around town for a coffee break with some mates, it was back to my place for some more movies. The Illusionist was first up - excellent, with some really beautiful scenery, costumes and dialouge. Acting and story/plot were also up there. After that we saw Little Miss Sunshine, a sweet little feel-good-movie. I really liked Steve Carell's performance and character.

Forgot to mention it, but I saw Grizzly man and The exorcism of Emily Rose not too long ago, two solid movies all in all. I'm easily scared by horror/fright films so the Emily Rose movie kind of got to me, hehe. Grizzly man was unbelievably sad, funny and tormenting, annoying. Today I watched the finnish movie Matti, which kind of resembles Grizzlyman in mood and feeling. Thumbs up for all three movies.

New place and soon new year

I have finally moved to a new appartment. My older brother was kind enough to let me stay at his place for a while, until I can find something on my own. It's pretty rough to get a decent place in Gothenburg at the moment, but I'm searching like a mad man so hopefully I'll get hooked up soon enough. At the moment I'm just happy about having somewhere to stay that has an internet connection.




Anyone else missed the Harthouse Mannheim compilation 'Electronic Injection'? Seriously good shit all the way through with mixed styles. The Terence Fixmer track 'Eaux Troubles' has got me mezmerized the most at the moment. Buy this awesome release!

Now here's my prediction for the upcoming year - 2007
First of all the fast and steady rise of minimal techno (and its relatives) as the dominant club music has been awesome and great. However it's getting almost silly now, everyone and his mother is competing over who likes electronic music the most and who was first in doing so. It's one big ass 'ryggdunkar'-scene today. Not all bad, of course - it spreads the music, but a little annoying to see that indiepop kid with musical tunnel vision suddenly spewing superlatives over the latest Kompakt release or whatever. Anyways.

Two thousand and seven will probably see a decline in this trend, sooner or later. Sonar'07 will probably host a record amount of swedes though. I think the next big thing is very boring music, elevator ultra minimal blips and shit (I will name it 'elevator-post-techno') AND/OR the rise of a completely new genre, PANZER ELEKTRO - bonecrushing hard electro not far from noise, almost unlistenable and uh, yeah. What do you think? Yes, I'm taking the piss.

Jokes aside, something sad happened yesterday night. Ohmygosh has been more or less forced to close down. A big loss for the blog community and techno heads world wide. OMG has introduced me to an enormous amount of new producers, labels and tracks. I think, honestly, OMG made me buy more records and certainly of a wider variety. A big thanks for the time and dedication you guys put down and into your excellent blog.

Edit: OMG seems to be back on track with a slight change in direction to smaller labels etc. Also added Bret Easton Ellis' wonderful 'Lunar Park' to the list, a great book.

Isolee live @ Sonar'06

Oh the joy of not being able to walk around in the central area of the city without being stepped on or shoved around. Christmas hysteria is here! Myself, I'm mostly concerned with my two upcoming exams (Real-time systems tomorrow!).

I've had two marvelous weekends back-to-back, with awesome club nights and good company.
Last saturday we went to the balkan-techno-extravaganza[tm] club called 'Beli Konj' arranged by the Glory Crew at Respekt* - great success and happy times ensued despite the long and slow queue to get in. After that a nice techno-minimale after party was held by a friend until early morn'.
This friday we built a ginger bread house (pepparkakshus) and drank good stuff to warm up, then we made a pit stop at Smaka and after a beer or two there it was off to The Eye at Nef, which of course was as good as always. One taxi, with great people, later I found myself at another after party that kept on for long enough.

Thanks to all friends & aquintances for making my weekends bitchslappin' good! Now I'm looking forward to see what the 25th and new year has in store (don't believe the hype! "cyberpunk retro fest med maria antoinette -stuk").

Finally had the time and connection to look at OMG, some seriously good stuff they post - cheers guys.
